I just wondering, whats with carl zeiss lenses?
i mean. they sell EXCLUSIVELY lenses for sony, nokia et cetera.
how different are they from lenses that leica sell? or canon or olympus or nikon?
what is the difference?
Zeiss lenses are legendary for their quality. "Legend" might be the key word, though. In the dark ages - BC - "Before Computer" - lenses were designed by highly skilled mathmeticians and physicists and them kept their formulas closely guarded. If they hit on a good formula, it was like magic. Zeiss was extremely good at lens design. Part of the anger about the influx of Japanese equipment was that they utilized computer lens design very heavily. They discovered how to break some of the rules that Zeiss and others considered the holy grail and they could make lenses that were close or equal in quality for a lot less money.
Zeiss lenses are still wonderful lenses. (As far as I know, they have not sold the name, like so many companies do... Anyone???) There are several companies that are at least as good, though. Nikon and Canon from Japan come to mind. Leica and Schneider from Germany come to mind.
