How do you find the density of tiny pieces of metal?
We're doing this thing in science where we get a random mixture of solids and liquids, and we have to identify them. I found these tiny pieces of metal, and i don't know how to find the density of them, because they are too small to weigh on a triple beam balance scale, or use liquid displacement to find the volume. What should I do?
Perhaps you are going at it from the wrong direction if m = W/g is out. Pour the mixture through a fine filter; so the metal is filtered out. Let the metal and filter dry. Then pass a magnet under the filter with the metal filings in it. If the filings move, they are Fe, iron filings; if they don't, they are not. Look up the density for Fe in an online table.
If the filings are not Fe, take one and pass it through a colorless flame from a Bunsen. Note the color the metal burns with. For example, copper burns with a blue-green color, sodium produces bright yellow, etc. Any first year chemistry book should provide a list of burn colors by material burned. If a burn color indicates a given metal, then look up its density.
That's the best I can do given you can't use the usual mass over volume to find the density.
