Can a home schooled student join extracurricular activities at a local public or private school?
The following 18 states have equal access laws that force home schooled students to be allowed to participate in school sports: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming. In Wyoming and Arizona, the law only applies to interscholastic activities.
There is a lot of debate within the homeschooling community as to whether this should be allowed or not. Many oppose it, as they oppose any government interference with homeschooling. In my opinion, it should be a matter of choice for individual families. No one is forced to participate, so a homeschooler who wishes to can be free of the government's influence. Those who wish to take advantage of part of what their tax dollars fund should have that option as well. Whatever the decision, it should be an individual one.
There are plenty of activities that are sponsored by homeschooling groups, There are home school and school choirs, sports teams, debate clubs, drama clubs, etc. though some activities, like football or a marching band are not available in every community outside of schools.
