i just got a 52 lb. digiweigh scale through the mail today. i was wondering what inter bmc parcel post( exept local) means. what does it mean? and what does local zone, zones 1 and 2, zone 3, zone 4, zone 5, zone 6, zone 7, and zone 8 mean? and what does the difference between first class mail first class mail internation? and priority mail and priority mail international? thanks. 10 POINTS!!!
Boy, you sure have a lot of questions. Let's get started.
BMC, Bulk Mail Center, is a facility that only handles classes of mail other than First Class. They handle Package Services and Standard Mail. Those classes travel only by surface transportation.
There are 2 rate tables for Parcel Post. Inter BMC and Intra BMC. If you go to http://pe.usps.gov, you can download what is called a "Zone Chart". Zones are based on where a package is shipped from and where it is going to.
A BMC serves a large geographic area. When you look at the Zone Chart, certain Zip Codes, or ranges of Zip Codes will have an asterisk, those Zip Codes are eligible for Intra BMC Rates, which are lower. These Zip Codes are ones that are within the service area of that BMC, so there is minimal transportation involved.
Inter BMC rates are higher because the package must be transported between BMC's. Again, any BMC rates will only apply to Package Services mail.
Zones are set up by distance that an item must travel between origin and destination. The longer the trip, the higher the zone number, and the rate in some cases.
Local, would be Zip Codes that generally begin with the same first 3 numbers, and perhaps other 3 digit Zip Codes depending on your area.
First Class Mail is what most people use everyday. This includes personal correspondence, bills, invoices, statements of account or any other private personal communication. First Class Mail is sealed against Postal Inspection simply because of the personal, private nature of the mail.
Priority Mail is simply First Class Mail that weighs more than 13 ounces. Although any mailable matter can be sent as Priority Mail, regardless of weight, any First Class Mail that goes over 13 ounces will be classified as Priority Mail by default.
The International services you mention are basically the same as described, with other restrictions and qualifications based on the country of destination, but is only for items that will be leaving the US.
