can someone tell me all they can about a polarizing microscope?? ?
i need to know as much as possible about a polarizing mircroscope and what forensic scientists use it for, would be greatly appreciated THANKS!!!
A polarizing microscope allows for the recognition of structures that are made of highly organized molecules (minerals in rock, wood fibers, mineral polymers, DNA, tissue components, etc). This type of microscope employs the use of a polarizing filter. A polarizing filter allows light to pass through it, but only allows light to exit it vibrating in one direction. The sample of interest in usually between two polarizing filters and the sample of interest will appear as bright structures against a dark background.
I have never used this particular microscope, but I imagine that in forensic science it helps an investigator identify foreign objects like bits of wood, rocks, clothing fibers and other small articles too small to identify with the naked eye.
Important word to know is Biofringence: the ability to rotate the direction of vibration of polarized light.
Crystalline substances are biofringent.
