Questions about joining the Navy next year (2011)?
I'm seriously considering joining sometime mid next year around May or June, I just have to finish up some things with school, I'll be 20 when I join but I will turn 21 in August of that year (right after I join). Is that to old? Also if I join around May/June of 2011 how long does training, boot camp, basically the whole process before you get shipped out take? Does that count as part of your "time"? Also do you get to pick a job based on your likings? And people who are/were in the navy please tell me how the benefits are? I've also heard you have a choice of where to be deployed as in a "wishlist" but that doesn't automatically mean you go there, they send u wherever they need u. Thanks very much guys
you sound a bit like me. i was 20 when i joined and was in basic training for my 21st birthday. i had no problem at all and there were guys older than i. so age is not a issue. .
joining - "shipping out" is different for each MOS. but you can expect the first year to be a "training" year. from day 1, even before you get your uniform it is considered part of your "time". when you go to see a recruiter you may tell them what mos you are interested in. they will try their best to find one that suites you. i always said this to new applicants "close your eyes and you are in the navy, what do you see yourself doing"? that is a good indication of what mos is best.
for me the benefits of the navy were travel, good pay, education, excitement and security. as for the wish list you get to pic a top 3 but as you say there is no guarantee. but i have Always gotten my #1 spot in my 21+ years in.
i am 47 years old, i have degrees in physics, biology, business and minor in law all paid for and because of the navy. i am retired and get paid $3500 a month with no tax, indexed at the rate of inflation with full medical and dental. so i am 47 and do not have to worry about working. i can do what ever i want. all because of the military. i joined the army as an enlisted man in hopes of getting a commission later. that did not happen. i dumped the army and was commissioned as a navy officer and sent to annapolis. i later became a navy seal officer and retired at the rank of lt commander.
