Has any atheist out there ever changed the mind of a "believer"?
I have debated many Christians and Muslims, but I have never convinced anyone to leave their religion. Later I realised why this is. It is best articulated by Carl Sagan who said; "You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief isn’t based on evidence, it’s based on a deep seated need to believe." This describes the problem perfectly.
In order to analyse something in a rational way it is necessary to have a neutral, emotionally detached and objective viewpoint. The problem is that believers certainly are NOT emotionally detached from their religion; in fact, in many cases they base their ENTIRE LIVES around it. They are extremely biased and selective with how they analyse it (only considering evidence which seems to support it's veracity, and ignoring all evidence to the contrary). I have never been able to change the mind of a "believer", has any atheist out there had success at this? How did you do it?
Well I was raised Catholic and I was fairly closed minded. Athiests on the internet with their constant bashing and insults because they are always...ALWAYS right..>_> (douchebags...nah Im kidding..only most).
Where was I? Oh yeah..Atheists opened my eyes up a bit to the possibility of a purely scientific world. They made me realize that a lot about religion is bullshit, but they could not definitively prove there is no God and never will. I'll never give up on the belief there COULD be a god, because I can't prove it. Even Steven Hawkins said that "One cannot prove that God doesn't exist." I firmly believe in many scientific theories and explanations, but I don't understand why people think that God cannot be the reason behind them.
Also why do Atheists believe themselves to be smarter and more knowing and aware than (assuming he does exist) an omniscient, all power, ever existent being. Why do people think they can even comprehend that? Atheists may have converted me to being an Agnostic, however, they'll never convince me to give up on at least the possibility of something we can't disprove or even begin to understand.
