Is Do it yourself Complete Blood Count possible?
Providing that I own a microscope (1200X) oil, glass and sleeves. Would it be possible for me to do my own CBC? How is it done? I can't find any video online but I know it's done manually. Anyone knows?
Of course if it is any more risky than poking myself I am not gonna do it...I am just curious.

A CBC consists of a White Blood Cell count, a Differential, a Hematocrit and a Hemoglobin. Yes, it is possible to do something like this in your basement, but you would need the equipment. You would need a cell cytometer and the proper diluents to do the WBC count. For the Differential, you would need a microscope, microscope slides, and Wright's or Giemsa Stain. For the hematocrit, you would need a micro-pipette and a special centrifuge to spin it down. For hemoglobin, you would need a Coleman or Klett Photometer. All of this would cost you around $10,000 for the setup. Oh, and figure about 1 semester of schooling in a good Medical Laboratory Specialist course to learn how to do all these things. The skills are not easy to self-teach.
