Can someone tell me what happens in each stage in the process of mitosis?
Not too much...but what parts can we see with the microscope and a little about each stage! Thanks!
The cell cycle has three parts: interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.
INTERPHASE
G1 = gap one. The newly formed daughter cell grows by adding cytoplasm and organelles. The cell performs its normal activities, depending on what kind of cell it is. Some cells never divide, and they spend their entire lives in G1.
S = synthesis. The DNA is replicated to prepare for cell division. Replication means that the DNA is copied exactly so there are two complete sets of DNA to divide up.
G2 = gap two. The cell grows more to get ready to divide.
MITOSIS
1. Prophase has three main accomplishments which prepare for dividing up the DNA evenly:
... The chromatin coils and condenses to form chromosomes.
... The nucleoli and nuclear envelope disintegrate.
... The spindle forms.
2. Metaphase: the spindle pushes and pulls the centromeres of the chromosomes to the move them to the equator of the spindle.
3. Anaphase: the spindle pulls on the centromeres until they split apart. Then the spindle pulls the sister chromosomes to opposite poles of the spindle.
4. Telophase is the opposite of prophase. Just as prophase got ready to divide up the DNA evenly, telophase puts everything back the way it was.

... The chromosomes lengthen and unwind to form chromatin.
... The nucleoli and nuclear envelope reappear.
CYTOKINESIS divides the cytoplasm to make two daughter cells, each containing one of the new nuclei.
... In plant cells a cell plate forms in the middle of the cell. New plasma membranes and cell walls are laid down along the cell plate to finish dividing the two daughter cells.
... In animal cells a cleavage furrow forms as the middle of the cell pinches in. The pinching continues until the two daughter cells are separated.
