Will $1500 get a quality microscope?
My 17 year old daughter really loves science, biology, and she's always making comments like "I wonder what nasty germs are on that doorknob" and things like this.
She went out and bought a book that shows pictures of all the micro-organisms, and shes been looking at it for hours a day!!
My husband has been looking to buy her a good microscope that she can use to satisfy her urge to learn about such things!!
Were looking to spend $1500-$3000.
Will this get us a good one?
Would a more expensive one be better?
She is going to college soon, so if she needs it, i want it to be good enough!
Can you recommend any?

yes. you should get a decent one, particularly if you buy an used on from somebody who also supplies to universities, but you should get without any trouble a good new microscope as well.
Generally the quality of the lenses will be what determines the quality of the microscope most and what will make it more or less expensive. If you look on an objective, there will be two numbers on it: the magnification, then a slash, and then a second number (numerical aperture). The larger the second number is, the better the objective and the more expensive it will be. Ideally the microscope would have four or five objectives. A 10x lens should have a numerical aperture of at least 0.3, a 20x lens at least of 0.6, a 40x lens at least of 0.7, a 60x lens should be an oil immersion lens and the numerical aperture should be at larger than 1. The 100x lens should be at least 1.25.
If you buy a microscope which comes with good objectives, the rest of the microscope should be decent as well.
You do not want a metallurgical, polarizing or inverted microscope. Get a microscope which is suitable for biological sciences, that's what your daughter appears to be interested in. It will be an upright brightfield microscope, though the dealer may call it some other name. If you have problems, you could ask your daughter's biology teacher to help you to chose one.
