How do I work out Polarity in relation to elution time for a chromatograph?
Im currently writing a practical for university involving hplc (high performance liquid chromatography) and the three samples of xylenol, anisol and phenetole.
I need to know which order they elute from the column and in order to figure this out i need to know their polarity order?
please someone help me 
It depends on what kind of Mobile and Stationary phase you are using. There are two possibilities.
1- Polar stationary phase with non-polar mobile phase
2- Polar mobile phase with non-polar stationary phase
Normal HPLC uses Polar Stationary phase with non-polar mobile phase in which the MOST polar will stay the LONGEST in the column... and vice versa.
But If you are using Reverse HPLC the its the otehr way around.
I believe the Order of polarity is as following:
MOST POLAR ----------> LEAST POLAR
Anisole > Xylenol > Phenetol
