How to grow bacteria using a petri dish and agar?
Any advice of conditions and timescales that I should be looking at to grow bacteria from swab samples using petrie dishes and agar for common bacterias such as e-coli, salmonela, etc?
This is for personal hobby to be looked at using my new microscope (Leitz Ortholux 2). Also, what kind of magnification would be required?

1.Make sure the swabs are sterile. Otherwise, any kind of bacteria-even unwanted types- could get into the dish.
2. Know your types of agar. There are many kinds of agars; each one will give you a different result. For instance, while salmonella might grow good in one e-coli might not do so well.
3. Leave at least two days.
4. DO NOT OPEN FREQUENTLY!!! Other bacteria might get into the dish.
The magnification depends on how large you want the image to be...
