Generating power directly from heated water?
I fully understand the concept of a steam driven turbine to generate electricity (use of steam to turn turbine, which drives a generator to produce electricity), however is there a way of directly harnessing the potential energy in heated water (i.e. water in a supercritical state) without the use of turbines? If there are no current technologies available is anyone aware of any advanced research in to this field?
I guess you are talking about a thermoelectric generator (TEG) which includes thermocouples and other such devices. Simply speaking this generates electricity directly from a temperature difference, but the same can be said as for a carnot cycle heat engine. It is best to have a large temperature difference. Most of these use a burner on the hot side. There are reasonably large modules around, up to about 5KW, usually using propane burners, and intended for remote power applications. The loink below is a start, but search for thermo electric generator to find plenty of different ideas.
Look up OTEG link below which talks about using rankine cycle turbines with refrigerants as the working fluids, but also the open cycle OTEG seems to use a reduced pressure to boil the water at a low pressure and temperature, and superheated steam occurs during the cycle, which implies that the supercritical state could be partly involved. Obviously most types of heat engine can be used with appropriate working fluids, but the efficiency depends on the temperature difference, so the higher that is the better.
Not sure how a supercritical state comes in with a TEG. Perhaps you expect a better heat transfer through being in a supercritical state. Don't know.
