A student forgot to label the vials in which he stored three different solid compounds required for his research project. He knows that the compounds are biphenyl (C6H5-C6H5), magnesium sulphate, and 2-chlorobenzoic acid(pKa=2.92). Using only the reagents supplied for this experiment, propose a procedure, including expected observations and conclusions for every step, to help the student identify which compound is contained in each of the three vials.
Add small sample of each to water.
biphenyl is completely insoluble and may float on the water or be suspended in it (density = 0.992: Aldrich catalogue) It looks like an organic cmpd; may have a smell.
MgSO4 will dissolve in water and give a nearly neutral soln (do you have pH paper or an indicator that changes above ~4 (methyl orange?). You could add BaCl2 soln white ppt of BaSO4. It looks like an inorganic xtl
2-chlorobenzoic is a quite a "strong" weak acid; pH of 0.1 M soln ~2 (can you do the calculation?) so will be acidic to pH paper, methyl orange will be red.
