What was the bright object in the eastern sky? It was midnight, 30 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio.?
The full moon was high in the sky. I noticed this about halfway between the moon and the horizon. There was a color cast about the brightness. It was like a white center with a yellow and blue ring just on the left side. It looked more like a group of lights so I watched for it to move, it did not. I got out the binoculars, 12X. With these I could see a larger star or planet. It appeared to have several more small bright objects at about 8 o’clock and at least one at 2 o’clock. The larger sphere was very bright white.
Jupiter.
The 12x description matches the position of its main satellites (the ones observed by Galileo in 1610 with a telescope roughly equivalent to today's binoculars, but with higher magnification) as they were around midnight yesterday (Aug.24/25).
If you are lucky enough to have clear weather tonight (Wednesday) around the same time, then there will be two on the right, very close together and very close to the planet (a challenge for your binoculars), while the two on the left will be quite wide and easier to pick out.
